TRAFFIC RULES IN NETHERLANDS

Driving side

Vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road. Overtaking is done on the left.

Seat belts

Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers, both in the front and back seats.

Speed limits

• Urban areas: 50 km/h (31 mph)
• Outside urban areas: 80 km/h (50 mph)
• Motorways: 100 km/h (62 mph) during the day (06:00–19:00) and 120–130 km/h (75–81 mph) during the night (19:00–06:00). Always check local signage as limits can vary.

Alcohol limit

The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.05% for experienced drivers and 0.02% for novice drivers (those with less than 5 years of driving experience).

Use of mobile phones

Using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited unless using a hands-free system.

Child safety

Children under 1.35 metres (4.4 feet) must use an approved child seat. Children taller than 1.35 metres must use seat belts.

Right of way

Vehicles coming from the right generally have priority unless otherwise indicated.

Roundabouts

Vehicles inside the roundabout have the right of way unless otherwise indicated by road signs.

Toll roads

At present, there is no widespread toll system for driving on national roads and highways in the Netherlands. This allows you to navigate the country without incurring extra charges for road usage. However, there are exceptions with two toll tunnels: the Kiltunnel and the Westerschelde Tunnel, where fees apply.

Parking

Be mindful of parking zones, which are clearly marked. In these zones, you must display a parking disc (available from petrol stations or supermarkets) to show your arrival time. These zones usually have time restrictions.
